← This is Messier 87, a giant elliptical galaxy that is part of the Virgo Cluster. The jet visible in this Hubble image is immense — 5,000 light-years long — and is caused by the supermassive black hole at M87’s core. The Russian RadioAstron space telescope that launched recently will enable VLBI observations with 10,000 times the resolution of the Hubble.
