← “Solar System Education” posters by James Gulliver Hancock. The Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Chile has seen first light and has begun collecting images. Pictured above is one of them, the Antennae Galaxies. Because of its ability to capture light at submillimeter wavelengths, the ALMA array can see through the gas clouds which generally block the view of star formation, and image these areas in higher resolutions than have been possible before. The orange and yellow areas in the picture above are examples of such star-forming regions, a result of the collision of two galaxies. →
