The image above was created by scanning a page from a parchment prayer book, written in the 12th Century, with X-Rays from a particle accelerator at Stanford. The vertical text is the copy from the prayer book. The red horizontal writing, revealed by the X-Rays, is what was written on the parchment before it had been scraped and re-used: a collection of Greek texts, including the only known copies of two works by Archimedes dating from the third century B.C.
