Some illustations from The Mysteries of Nature and Art by John Bate, a 17th Century “technical compendium” that purportedly nudged a young Isaac Newton towards the path of science.
The book was printed in 1634 and consists of descriptions of “mechanical contrivances” in the subjects of water-works, fireworks, and “extravagants” (miscellaneous experiments), as well as drawing and painting.
