Easy to miss rules in eldritch horror?

I just played for the first time and man it was such a story. We did figure out that we've been stacking weapon bonuses (dual wield pistols plus a rifle and a fishing net…), so we've been throwing way too many dice. But even with throwing 12 dice on one turn, we still can't manage to kill a 3 health monster.

But that made me think about the other minor rules that we could've missed. What are some things I should keep in mind?

DO not buy from Bordgames.ca!!!!!!! via /r/boardgames

DO not buy from Bordgames.ca!!!!!!!

I purchased Dead of Winter from bordgames.ca for double the price you would pay retail just so i could get the game before my SOs birthday. They messed up the shipping label and the game was retturned to them. They expect me to pay an additional 60 dollars in shipping fees and the game will arrive a week late for my SOs Bday. Horrible service from a terribly run company.
