A picture, on cardboard and done in poster paint, crayon, and pencil, by Bill Traylor. Created some time between 1939 and 1942.

Traylor was born into slavery in 1854. In 1939, at the age of 85, he moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where he began to draw and paint. By 1942 he had created between 1,200 and 1,500 pictures.

Traylor’s work is now considered “…among the most important examples of self-taught art ever created.” The High Museum in Atlanta is currently hosting a major exhibition of his work.
