The 18th Century Kalyazin Bell Tower, is the last remnant of the 17th Century Makaryevsky Monastery in Kalyazin. It risers above the waters of the Uglich Reservoir in Russia, a body of water created in 1939 when Stalin dammed the upper Volga as part of a program to modernize the country. Further evidence of the march into modernity can be seen in the background, where a radio telescope has been constructed in the town.
