Theodore Roosevelt was campaigning in 1912. On October 14th, a man who had been following Roosevelt for months decided that the time had come to strike, and shot Roosevelt as he was leaving a hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The bullet fired by the would-be assassin went through Roosevelt’s coat, jacket, the speech he had in his pocket (pictured above), the case for his glasses (also pictured), and entered his chest.

Declaring that, since he was not bleeding from the mouth and thus did not have a punctured lung, Roosevelt went on to speak as scheduled, for over an hour, saying to the crowd “It takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose”.
